SOFRITO RECORDS

Wanted to shine some light on Sofrito Records

Sofrito is an international collective of DJ,s Producers and Musicians based in East London, and is headed by Hugo Mendez, Frankie Francis “El Diablo” and the Mighty Crime Minister. Typical sets take in a mixture of Heavy Afro, Latin, Cumbia, Ska, Compas, Biguine, Plena, Funk, Highlife, Mambo and much more…

The Sofrito Specials label and forthcoming Discos Sofrito label release Dancefloor-Friendly Tropical music, check out the releases and exclusive mixes at www.sofrito.co.uk.

Heavy Afro Latin Sounds is their moniker, and they stand by it. As do I. Legendary parties, insanely deep mixes, and solid heat of tropical/latin/african 12″s” released so far.

LATIN BOOGALOO

One of my favorite latin styles of music, is the Latin Boogaloo. Hard and pounding rhythm borrowed from the Amercian R&B boogaloo beat, latin boogaloo reached its popularity in the mid 50’s to 1960’s. Although its popularity has decreased here in the states, it is still extremely popular in Cali, Colombia.

Here are some of my top favorites of the sub-genre.

rolando laserie – yo bailo boogaloo

carlos campos – shake it boogaloo

carlos hayre – me gusta boogaloo

orquesta los melodicos – les cornichons

joey pastrana – afro azul

60’s Original Cumbias

Inaugural post here for myself.  Glad to have this up and running.  I hope you and enjoy, and please feel free to pass on to as many people as you like.

These are a small handful of my favorite cumbias.  Alex Acosta, Los Melodicos, Rufo Garrido, Lucho Bermudez, and Edmundo Arias were all prominent cumbia maestros in the 60’s scene, that played Colombian style cumbias.  Infectious and sexy horn rhythms to beckon that ever so dangerously fierce young woman onto the dancefloor. Recorded all from original vinyl.

Los Melodicos – La Murga

Edmundo Arias – El Mecanico

Rufo Garrido – La Cumbia Brava

Alex Acosta – La Millionara

Lucho Bermudez – Arroz Con Coco
