Before we get in to this I’d like to stress my utmost respect to the ZZK crew. It’s one thing to notice a particular sound from a group of folks, say in your home town, but to see this coming from afar, a different country on a global scale, is where I think a lot crews would like to be. At first I was just going to post the Zizek discography and some pictures and such but I got curious as to how approachable these cats were. To my surprise Grant aka El G was all about Austin’s Peligrosa interviewing Zizek. This is the first in what will be a series of interviews conducted with two things in mind: promoting the crew (in this case Zizek) and bridging the gap between Latin DJ/production crews afar and the one in Austin. I hope you enjoy.

Interview, Music and More……
Who is Zizek/ZZK Records and why the name?
Zizek is Villa Diamante, DJ Nim and El G (that´s me!).
The name was inspired by the philosopher, Villa Diamante is a philosophy and film student. Nim and I liked the name and then investigated who Zizek was, and liked him too. It was kind of a joke originally, naming a “hip hop” club after a contemporary philosopher. But in the end it all kinda makes sense on a deeper level!
ZZK was abbreviated as we got bigger, to not have any problems using a famous philosophers name as a brand!
How did you get started in the music scene in Buenos Aires?
I got started by throwing parties and promoting artists through my website, WhatsUpBuenosAires.com I started working with all my favorite artists, both online and in real life. Zizek fell into my lap in my 3rd year of this, after WUBA had made a name and impact on the scene for throwing good parties, getting good crowds and having good taste. I actually started in visuals (VJ), but with Zizek got so psyched about the party I moved behind the decks one day and have never looked back.
What kind of music do you play and why?
I play all kinds of music. Here in BA ill play just about everything. Hip hop, baltimore, electro, kuduro, baile, dubstep, street bass, lazer bass, mashups, whatever. Why? Because I like everything and like to mix it up.
But abroad it doesnt make much sense for me to come all the way from Argentina and play dubstep from London or stuff from blogs. So I play out all my Zizek stuff. All the kids who are making ill music that as the label manager, I have access to before anyone else.
Have you noticed an increase in people interested in Cumbia, why do you think that is?
Yeah, Cumbia got a lot of buzz recently. I think Zizek had something to do with it. Cumbia has always been around, and the experimental cumbia scene was always bubbling up in BA. But WUBA & Zizek gave it the proper exposure it deserved. Zizek gave a platform for all the producers in town to come and play and experiment with all the stuff theyre working on for an open minded dancefloor of hungry party goers. The combination of the great music with the great public is what made Zizek work.
What venues do you play regularly?
We´re in transition down here, we dropped our old venue and are moving to a new one. Until we actually get in there and play Im still nervous. Nightlife (and life in general!) is in a constant flux down here. Nothing is certain, everything is subject to change. Some of the reasons why this places keeps me on my toes, adventurous and fun, but can also be a pain in the ass! Especially because I dont just throw a party. I hustle on various fronts. Thankfully Ive got 2 good partners to run this with me!
What’s been your favorite show to date and why?
Hard hard question. First NYC show post SXSW 08 on a Monday was ill. Seatlle show on a Tuesday in July 08 was crazy. Playing at the Getty in LA for 2000 peoples was amazing. Then Europe was amazing too. Malmo, London, Berlin, Barcelona, Oslo, all solid shows. Paris had a particular magic because the show came together in 2 days after working to get one for 3 months. Place filled up and people danced all night and was a great feeling. Here in BA, our first Super Zizek, with Douster & Oro11 on the bill, was monumental. 1000 people showed up. It snowed the next day, first time in 90 something years here.
Where do you see the music scene in Argentina going in the next few years?
Bigger and better and more global. Exploring new grounds, mixing, mashing and fusing. Watch out.
What does Zizek do when they are not doing a show?
The Zizek boys? Hustle. Work. Argue. Rest. Chill. Relax. And then do it all over again!
What projects are upcoming for you guys in this third year of ZZK?
Our next tour where we´ll play coast to coast and play Coachella, this April. A summer tour. Hopefully an Asian tour. Chile, Brazil and Colombia are looking good too. Releases, lots of releases, starting with ZZK Sound Vol. 2 which is absolutely ridiculous. So excited to release this album.
